Blackburn Rovers

  • OVERVIEW
The birth of the Premier League also heralded Blackburn Rovers' return to the top flight for the first time in 26 years. They underlined their ambition by breaking the English transfer record to sign a 22-year-old Alan Shearer for £3.2m. Other expensive signings ensured they finished an impressive fourth.

Owner Jack Walker continued to splash his cash and in their second season, his team were runners-up to arch North Western rivals Manchester United in 1993/94. The positions were reversed the following season as Rovers pipped United to the title on the last day of the season.

The team have failed to reach those heights since then and in 1999, Rovers became the first former Premier League champions to be relegated. The club bounced back in 2001 and progress under Graeme Souness and then Mark Hughes has seen them qualify for Europe four times in six years.

Hughes left the club for Manchester City in June 2008 after helping them to a seventh place finish. He was replaced by Paul Ince later that month. However Ince was sacked on 16th December 2008 after a poor start to the season which brought just three wins from 17 matches. Sam Allardyce took over as manager, charged with the task of hauling Rovers away from the drop zone. They finished 15th, seven points clear of relegation. That finish was significantly bettered in the 2009/10 season when the club secured 10th place. On 13th December 2010 Allardyce was sacked by Blackburn.

    CLUB HERITAGE
Blackburn Rovers were born at a hotel meeting on 5th November 1875, organised by Shrewsbury school old boys Arthur Constantine and John Lewis. The club's patronage by the wealthy middle classes helped it stay afloat and outlive many of the other clubs in the area.

As one of the top clubs, they were approached in 1888 to become one of the 12 founding members of the Football League. They finished the inaugural season in fourth place and unbeaten at home.

Rovers moved into their permanent home at Ewood Park in September 1890 and marked their first season there with a fifth FA Cup win. But a downturn in fortunes saw them narrowly escape relegation on several occasions and the 1928 FA Cup victory was their last major trophy for 67 years.

Rovers were relegated from the top flight for the first time in 1936, signaling the start of their long struggle to regain their status as a top team. Relegation in 1966 saw the beginning of their 26-year exile from the top flight and it was not until Walker and his millions came on board in 1991 that Blackburn returned to their glory days.

    PREMIER LEAGUE HISTORY
1992/93 - Blackburn break national transfer record by signing Alan Shearer from Southampton for £3.5m.
1993/94 - Finish runners-up in the FA Carling Premiership
1994/95 - Break the English transfer record again, signing Chris Sutton from Norwich City for £5m. Win the FA Carling Premiership
1995/96 - Manager Kenny Dalglish becomes Director of Football. Former assistant, Ray Harford, becomes manager
1996/97 - Shearer sold to Newcastle United for a record £15m. Harford resigns after failing to win any of the ten opening matches. Tony Parkes takes over as caretaker
1997/98 - Roy Hodgson appointed as manager
1998/99 - Hodgson sacked in December and replaced by Brian Kidd. Relegated
1999/00 - Kidd sacked. Parkes takes over again until March when the club appoint Graeme Souness

2004/05 - Souness leaves to join Newcastle. Replaced by Mark Hughes
2007/08 - Manager Mark Hughes leaves the club for Manchester City in June, and Rovers name Paul Ince as his replacement
2008/09 - Paul Ince is sacked in December after a run of six successive Barclays Premier League defeats. He was replaced by former Bolton Wanderers and Newcastle manager Sam Allardyce who steers the club to safety.

    Manager Steve Kean

Steve Kean was handed the job of Blackburn Rovers manager  after Sam Allardyce's sacking in December 2010.

Kean moved from the caretaker role to full-time boss after Rovers' new owners Venky's were impressed with the former first team coach's talents. On 20th January, he signed a new contract keeping him at the club until June 2013.

Glasgow-born Kean began his playing career with Celtic and had a stint on loan with Swansea before moving to Portugal with Academica Coimbra where a broken leg forced him into coaching at the age of 27.

Kean returned to England to take charge of Reading's under-15 and under-16 sides and his success here earned him a promotion to head of youth by the then Royals manager Tommy Burns.

Fulham noticed Kean's talents and brought him to Craven Cottage and he moved up to become manager Chris Coleman's assistant after Jean Tigana left the club.

Kean provided much of the tactics and training drills for Coleman and he earned praise from Sir Alex Ferguson after he led Fulham to a 1-1 draw with Manchester United while Coleman was in hospital. He was Coleman's No.2 at Real Sociedad and Coventry City also.

A move to Blackburn followed where Allardyce appointed Kean first-team coach and he is regarded as one of the best in the game today.

    Kean backs Ronaldinho bid
Manager Steve Kean says Blackburn Rovers' ambitious bid for Brazil international Ronaldinho is a statement of intent.

Anuradha Desai, chairman of Venky's - who took over at Ewood Park in November - has confirmed Rovers had made a £6.2m bid for the AC Milan forward.

And Kean believes it sends out the right message to other would-be targets.

"I know there has been contact made by the owners to representatives of Ronaldinho but I don't know how far down the line it is and whether it will actually happen," he said.
"If any Premier League manager was asked if they wanted to sign someone who has been World Player of the Year twice they would be interested.

"That is something that puts us on the map in terms of trying to bring players of that stature to the club.

"Everyone should look as it as a positive because if we can attract players - maybe not that individual if it doesn't happen - but players of that stature I think it has been a long time since we have been able to do that."

    ENGLAND CAPTAIN

Rovers are believed to have offered the 30-year-old Ronaldinho a three-year £20m-plus deal.

"He is keen to play in the EPL (English Premier League) and I think that goes in our favour," Desai said.

She stressed paying the Brazilian's wages would not be a problem.

"To be precise [it is] 7.6m euros (£6.5m) for the first year and about 8.5m euros (£7.2m) for the second and third years."

She also said the club had made attempts to sign former England captain David Beckham on loan from Los Angeles Galaxy, adding that the club were "open whenever he is ready to come".

    GOOD THINKER

Desai has also confirmed the club are planning a long-term future with Kean at the helm.

Kean was surprisingly handed the club's reins for the remainder of the season following Sam Allardyce's sacking last month.

Rovers have won one of his four games in charge and, despite losing 3-0 to Sunderland on New Year's Day, Blackburn's hierarchy are eager to extend his deal.

Desai is a big fan of Kean and believes he deserves a longer deal that will be "at least two to three years".

Desai added: "We're making a contract for him which is going to be a full-time contract. It's not just about this season.

"It's going to be a proper contract. At least two to three years.

"He thinks well. He has a vision. Mark my words, he thinks well. He's a good thinker. That's his biggest strength."

    Santa Cruz rejoins Blackburn
Blackburn Rovers have signed their former striker Roque Santa Cruz on loan from Manchester City.

The Paraguay international has joined until the end of the season after struggling to make an impact at Eastlands since leaving Rovers in a £17.5m deal in summer 2009.

The 29-year-old, who scored 29 goals in two seasons at Ewood Park, is the club's first signing since their takeover by Indian firm Venky's in November.

Rovers confirmed the deal after the player completed a medical at the club's training ground on Friday morning.
    BRING QUALITY
Manager Steve Kean said: "When he was here first time he had a fantastic time and showed his quality.

"I think he feels he has got a little bit of business to finish. Hopefully he will go and do that until the end of the season.

"He has got an infectious personality and was very popular here first time around. I'm sure he will be this time.

"He's coming back to a place that was special to him and I am sure he is going to deliver as good if not better."

Blackburn will pay the majority of Santa Cruz's salary and Kean believes that shows how serious Venky's are to bring top players to the club.

He said: "That is something that shows the fans we can now go and compete and we can see off other teams, not only in this country but abroad.

"It shows the ambitions of the owners to match these fees and salaries to bring quality to the club."

The agreement with City contains no provision for a potential permanent deal but Kean plans to continue negotiating in the hope of securing Santa Cruz's services long term.

He said: "We are trying to speak to Manchester City to see if there can be an option at the end of it.

"We'll ask for that and if we can get it, all the better."

    REAL CHANCE
Santa Cruz has made just one Barclays Premier League appearance this season at City, where he has been behind Carlos Tevez, Mario Balotelli and Emmanuel Adebayor in the pecking order.

His move has been hastened by City's signing of Edin Dzeko this month.

Kean said: "I don't think his medical fitness is an issue although his match sharpness might not be there because he has not played as many minutes as he would have hoped."

Santa Cruz jumped at the chance to return to Ewood Park and could be back in a Rovers shirt when Blackburn travel to Chelsea on Saturday.

The striker told the official club website: "I feel like I am coming home. This has been the easiest decision of my career.

"I want to get playing and scoring goals again and this is a real chance for me to prove myself after a frustrating period. Everyone knows what Blackburn Rovers means to me."

    Rovers clinch Jones loan
Blackburn Rovers have signed Schalke midfielder Jermaine Jones on a six-month loan deal.

The 29-year-old USA international becomes the club's second signing of the transfer window after the arrival of Roque Santa Cruz from Manchester City.

Manager Steve Kean told the club's official website: "He's a fantastic signing for us.

"Anybody who knows him as a player, he's a natural ball winner, he's a very good passer as well."
Kean added: "He's got a fantastic engine, he can go box-to-box, he's a genuine all round midfield player."

    FRIENDLY APPEARANCES

Rovers will now await international clearance.

Jones, who was born in Frankfurt, made three friendly appearances for Germany before being cleared by FIFA to switch his allegiance to the United States in 2009.

Jones is eligible to play for the USA because his father is American. He made his debut for the country in October 2010.

The midfielder has been at Schalke since 2007, but has fallen out of favour with coach Felix Magath.

Jones aims to make an impression
Jermaine Jones is set to make a low-key start for Blackburn Rovers after arriving from Schalke on loan.

The United States international, who will represent the Ewood Park outfit until the end of the season, is to play in a closed-doors match to give manager Steve Kean an indication of whether he is ready to be included in the squad to face West Bromwich Albion on Sunday.

Jones, 29, is keen to hit the ground running after a frustrating time in the Bundesliga.
"We have a friendly game and I will play 45 minutes. I need to do well also in training. Then the coach will make a decision," said Jones.

"I hope to play on Sunday against West Bromwich Albion and I hope to show the fans that I can play in England.

"I am not thinking about staying here at this moment, only getting games and showing what I can do.

"I can only say thank you to Blackburn for taking me for six months. Then we will make a decision."

    BEST LEAGUE

Jones has also revealed that the last Barclays Premier League match he saw was Rovers defeating Liverpool 3-1 earlier this month.

The midfielder is an avid fan of the top flight, and once he heard of Rovers' interest in him, he had no hesitation in making the move to England.

Speaking to the club's official website, Jones said: "I'm really excited, I'm happy that I can play here for six months with Blackburn.

"I know that England is the best league and I've been watching a lot of games whilst I was with Schalke, in fact the last game I saw was Blackburn against Liverpool when Blackburn won 3-1 it was a good game.

"So when I hear that Blackburn want me, I said okay I go, I'll play in England for this good team.

"I've always watched a lot of Premier League games, I like the steel, I hope my game is suited to England."

    Kean signs new contract
Manager Steve Kean has signed a long-term contract to remain as manager of Blackburn Rovers until 2013.

The 43-year-old took over in a caretaker capacity following the sacking of Sam Allardyce in December, and was later given a contract until the end of the season.

However, Mrs Anuradha Desai, chairperson of club owners Venky's, had signalled the intention to give Kean a long-term deal earlier this month, and has now delivered.

Kean told the club's official website: "I am delighted to commit my future to Rovers at the start of what I see as a massively exciting new era for the club.
"The owners have shown great faith in me and I will do all I can to repay them.

"This is a great opportunity for me and I intend to grasp it with both hands."

    CAPABLE HANDS

Kean first joined Rovers as first-team coach in 2009, but has quickly found himself thrust into the limelight, with Desai clearly impressed by what she has seen so far.

"We have great confidence in Steve, someone who impresses us with his work ethic, enthusiasm, positivity and football philosophy," she said.

"We feel that the playing squad is in very safe and capable hands and we look forward to working with him.

"Stability is very important to us and this contract is further evidence of our desire to achieve such stability at the club."

    FANTASTIC GRIP

Rovers skipper Ryan Nelsen said: "It is fantastic news, it gives the club stability.

"It was a surprise when Sam Allardyce went but the owners have laid out their vision for the club and Steve has taken a fantastic grip of the helm.

"He is young and energetic and wants to do well as a manager. He will want to make his mark on the club.

"The rest of the season will be about stability and implementing small changes and then next season you will see a real DNA change and more of the vision for what the owners want.

"When you see their ambition, it is exciting."

    EARNED PRAISE

Glasgow-born Kean began his playing career with Celtic and had a stint on loan with Swansea City before moving to Portugal with Academica Coimbra where a broken leg forced him into coaching at the age of 27.

A move to Blackburn followed where Allardyce appointed Kean first-team coach and Rovers have been quick to secure him on a long-term deal after an impressive start to his managerial career.

    New deal for Nelsen
Blackburn Rovers defender Ryan Nelsen has signed a new contract with the club.

The 33-year-old New Zealand international was contracted to Rovers until next year, but has now penned a new one-year extension which will keep him at Ewood Park until the summer of 2013.

Nelsen joined Blackburn from DC United in 2005 and has been a first-team regular throughout his stay, making in excess of 200 appearances for the club.

    NO FAULT
The centre half is pleased to commit his future to Rovers and believes the club has a bright future under new manager Steve Kean and owners Venky's.

"It's been a crazy couple of weeks but our owners really have a vision in terms of how they see the club and they want to take it. It's very exciting," he said.

"They didn't have Sam [Allardyce] in their vision, he's paid the price through no fault of his own. But it could be really exciting for Blackburn."

Nelsen captained his country in last year's World Cup and, last month, was awarded the New Zealand Order of Merit for his services to football.

Nelsen led the All Whites to three draws at the World Cup in South Africa and was named in the World Cup team of the tournament by an international football website.

    Jones signs new Rovers contract
Phil Jones is the latest Blackburn Rovers player to commit to the club after signing a one-year contract extension.

The England Under-21 international, currently sidelined with a knee injury, has added another 12 months on to his current deal, which now takes him up to the summer of 2016.

Jones, who can play in defence or midfield, follows the likes of captain Chris Samba, Michel Salgado, Jason Roberts and Mark Bunn in agreeing new contracts in the last month.

    INCREDIBLE PROGRESS
"This is great news, especially on the back of so many other key players committing themselves to the club," said manager Steve Kean.

"Phil has made incredible progress over the past year or so and his form, prior to his unfortunate injury setback, attracted a lot of attention.

"It speaks volumes that he is happy to stay here for the long term and we are all absolutely delighted."

Jones was an ever-present in the Barclays Premier League this season before he was injured playing against West Ham United in December and subsequently underwent surgery to repair torn cartilage in his right knee.

He recently returned to light training and the 18-year-old could return as early as mid-March.

    Grella out for season
Blackburn Rovers midfielder Vince Grella has been ruled out for the rest of the season after an Achilles operation.

Blackburn manager Steve Kean has confirmed the Australian will miss the remainder of the campaign.

Grella has played just seven times in the current campaign, only twice since 24th October and has not featured since 26th February.

    look forward

"It has been hard for Vinny because he's picked up niggly injuries and this one has been quite a big operation on his Achilles," Kean said.

"He has had the plantaris removed and hopefully he can get some rehab under his belt and look forward to an injury-free season next season.

"I think he won't play again this season."

Rovers resume their battle to stay in the Barclays Premier League with a tough trip to title-chasing Arsenal on Saturday.

Although five places above the drop zone, Blackburn have only a one-point cushion and could drop into the bottom three before they kick off at Emirates Stadium.

    Nelsen out for the season
Blackburn Rovers defender Ryan Nelsen is out for the rest of the season after having a knee operation on Monday.

The New Zealander was forced off with the problem during last weekend's 1-1 Barclays Premier League draw against Birmingham City and manager Steve Kean revealed there was no option but for Nelsen to go under the knife.

The centre-back partnership between Nelsen and captain Christopher Samba has been one of Blackburn's main strengths and the news is a major blow to their survival hopes.

    floating debris

Kean said of the operation: "It went well. The surgeon was happy about it and he had a full clearout.

"There were a lot of little bits of floating debris in his knee that he's been in a lot of pain with. He couldn't manage to go on. We're hopeful he'll be back in time for pre-season."

    Rovers seal Petrovic move
Blackburn Rovers have signed Partizan Belgrade midfielder Radosav Petrovic, for an undisclosed fee.

The 22-year-old has signed a four-year contract with the Barclays Premier League club, having received a work permit.

The 6ft 4in defensive midfielder has made 19 appearances for Serbia, having made his debut for the country in August 2009.

Petrovic started his career at hometown club FK Jedinstvo Ub. A move to Radnicki Obrenovac followed, before he moved to Partizan in the summer of 2008.

    international colleagues

He was named in the Serbian league team of the year for the last two seasons and is currently with his international colleagues ahead of Serbia's international match against Russia in Moscow tomorrow.

Blackburn face a race against time to make sure Petrovic is eligible for Saturday's Barclays Premier League opener at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Petrovic is the club's second signing this summer, following Dundee United striker David Goodwillie to Ewood Park.

    Kalinic leaves Blackburn
Blackburn Rovers striker Nikola Kalinic has joined Ukrainian side Dnipro for an undisclosed fee.

The Croatia international, who arrived at the Barclays Premier League club from Hadjuk Split two years ago, completed the move to the Ukraine on Thursday.

He played for Croatia as a substitute in Wednesday night's international draw with the Republic of Ireland in Dublin and last scored for Blackburn in a 4-1 defeat at Aston Villa in February.

Kalinic scored two goals in 26 Barclays Premier League appearances, in his first campaign at Ewood Park and  bagged five in 18 outings last season.

He netted the winner in Rovers' first pre-season fixture against Accrington Stanley in July, but decided his future lay outside England.

    big impact

Meanwhile manager Steve Kean is delighted to have brought in Partizan Belgrade midfielder Radosav Petrovic on a four-year deal this week.

He told the official club website: "We are delighted to bring Radosav to the club, as he is a player that I have admired for some time.

"His record to date speaks for itself and he is exactly the type of player we have been looking to recruit.

"He is a dynamic midfield player, with a great box-to-box mentality and a good passer of the ball, who I believe will go on to make a big impact with Rovers.

"It is a fact that many European clubs were in the race for his signature and we consider getting him to Ewood Park as a major coup."

    Blackburn bring in Bruno
Blackburn Rovers have announced the signing of Brazilian full-back Bruno Ribeiro.

The defender joins Rovers on a free transfer, signing a three-year deal with the option of a further 12 months following a trial with Steve Kean's Lancashire side.

Bruno has been working with Rovers for much of the summer and travelled to the club's pre-season camp in Austria as well as playing in pre-season matches.

    previously played

He figured in Rovers' 2-1 win over Accrington Stanley and the 4-1 win over Kilmarnock last weekend.

The 28-year-old had previously played in his homeland of Brazil for Gremio Barueri, and could be in the squad to face Wolverhampton Wanderers at Ewood Park on Saturday.

Manager Steve Kean is targeting a top-10 finish as the new campaign gets under way.

"We have had a great pre-season and it's an exciting time," he said. "The lads have adapted to what we are trying to do and how we are trying to play and we saw some of that towards the end of last season.

"We want to finish in the top half of the table and by the end of the transfer window there is no reason why we can't have assembled a squad capable of doing that."

    Dann injury blow hits Blackburn
Struggling Rovers set to be without central defender for six weeks

Scott Dann has become a mainstay in the Blackburn Rovers defence this season

Blackburn Rovers have been rocked by the news their central defender Scott Dann will miss the next six weeks of the season with a groin problem.

The 24-year-old picked up the injury while scoring Rovers' equaliser in their Barclays Premier League match at home to West Brom on Saturday, which they eventually lost 2-1.

Dann managed to finish the match, but boss Steve Kean has revealed he has already undergone an operation to fix the problem.

"We have to face it up and crack on, although it is a tough one to take"

"It went much worse after the game and Scott was in a lot of pain and discomfort," said Kean.

"Scott has had an operation on his groin and to learn that he will be missing for such a huge chunk of the season is a devastating blow.

Blackburn are already without Dann's fellow defenders Ryan Nelsen, Michel Salgado, Martin Olsson and Gael Givet through injury, and they face fellow strugglers Bolton Wanderers in a huge match at Ewood Park on Tuesday.

"We now have five senior defenders absent and that makes it very difficult to say the least," added Kean.

Dann joined Blackburn for £6m from Birmingham City in the summer after the Blues were relegated from the Barclays Premier League last season.
