Vidic to miss rest of season
Manchester United skipper ruled out with serious knee injury

Manchester United skipper Nemanja Vidic injured himself against Basel

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that injured skipper Nemanja Vidic will miss the rest of the season.
The Serbian defender injured his knee in United's Champions League defeat in Basel in midweek.

"It's not unexpected but it's still bad news"
        - Sir Alex Ferguson

And Ferguson said he will need an operation after suffering ligament damage that will keep him out for the remainder of the 2011/12 campaign.

"We thought it was a bad one," said Ferguson. "He's out for the season. It's not unexpected but it's still bad news."

Vidic fell awkwardly challenging Basel forward Marco Streller in the opening half of their crucial Champions League group match and was stretchered off the field.

The 30-year-old has already had one spell on the sidelines this season, having spent two months out with a calf problem he suffered against West Brom on the opening day of the Barclays Premier League season.

United's Fletcher takes break from football
Manchester United midfielder out of action with health problems

Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher has decided to take some time off

Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher is to take an extended break from football because of health reasons.

The club said the 27-year-old has been suffering from ulcerative colitis (a chronic inflammatory bowel condition) for some time and has accepted medical advice to have some time off from the game.

"We hope the removal of the additional stress will aid his recovery"
        - Man Utd statement

The Scottish international has decided to take a leave of absence from the demands of training and playing in order to give him the best chance possible of achieving full remission once again.

A United statement said: "Darren's continued desire to play and his loyalty to both his club and country has probably compromised the chances of optimising his own health and fitness.

"We request that his privacy is respected and hope that the removal of the additional stress associated with speculation regarding his health will also aid his recovery."

Fletcher, who has played eight Barclays Premier League matches this campaign, had a two-month spell out towards the end of last season.

    Jones injury boost for United
Manchester United star likely to be fit to play on Boxing Day

Phil Jones was forced off during the match against QPR

Manchester United star Phil Jones looks set to play in their Boxing Day match at home to Wigan after scans revealed he has not broken his cheekbone.

The club had expected the 19-year-old to be sidelined after he was injured in the 5-0 win at Fulham.

"We feared the worst but there is no break"
        - Sir Alex Ferguson

But manager Sir Alex Ferguson said: "Phil Jones should be okay for Monday. We feared the worst but there is no break."

Jones' availability will be welcome news for Ferguson, who is already missing a number of key players.

Captain Nemanja Vidic is out for the season and fellow defender Rio Ferdinand is doubtful for the Wigan match, while midfielder Darren Fletcher has decided to take some time off on medical advice.

The news on winger Ashley Young was not as good as Ferguson revealed he will miss the next few weeks with a knee injury.

Wayne Rooney: Manchester United deny plans to sell player

Rooney was taken off in United's 3-0 defeat at Newcastle on Wednesday

Manchester United have denied a report that Wayne Rooney is to be sold in the January transfer window.

Saturday's Independent claims Rooney's relationship with manager Sir Alex Ferguson has broken down.

Earlier this week, Rooney accepted a fine for his performance in training following a night out.

But a joint statement from Rooney and the club said: "Any suggestion that Manchester United and Wayne Rooney are to part company is complete nonsense."

The statement continued: "We can assure all United fans that the manager and the club are committed to Wayne Rooney and Wayne is committed to the manager and the club.

"The player and the manager have always had and retain utmost respect for each other and look forward to working together in the coming seasons."

Rooney himself said on Twitter: "The Independent are talking absolute rubbish, my future is with Manchester United and the club and I am totally committed, the manager and I have no issues and anyone who says different doesn't know what they are talking about."

    WAYNE ROONEY FACTFILE

        *Born October 1985 in Croxteth

*Shoots to fame with last-minute winner against Arsenal in October 2002, five days before his 17th birthday

*Scores 17 goals in 77 appearances for Everton before joining Manchester United for £25.6m in 2004

*Wins PFA Young Player of the Year award in 2005 after 17 goals in debut United season

*Wins first of four Premier League titles in 2006-07 after scoring 14 league goals

*Scores a personal high 26 league goals in 2009-10 season and named PFA Player of the Year

*In April 2011 becomes third United player (after Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes) to score 100 Premier League goals

*Has scored 15 goals in 22 appearances for United in 2011-12 season (up to 6 January 2012)

Independent journalist James Lawton, who wrote the story, told BBC Radio 5 live: "I understand that the problems that Sir Alex Ferguson has experienced with Wayne Rooney going into a key time of the season has seriously undermined their relationship and there is a feeling that Ferguson has been deeply offended by the reaction of his most talented player at a pivotal time of the season."

When pushed about the claim that Rooney would be sold this month, Lawton attempted to defend himself: "The point I'm trying to make in the story, and I think it's a valid one, is that there is a real problem in the relationship between the Manchester United manager and his star player.

"I stand by the essence of what I've said in that there is a problem. Ferguson is famous for asking for trust and loyalty in his players and when that breaks, it can have a lasting effect. But if Rooney starts to perform to the level of consistent professionalism, which is a reasonable expectation, perhaps the crisis will pass."

Rooney, 26, agreed a new five-year contract at Manchester United in October 2010, just two days after announcing his intention to leave.

He went on a night out on Boxing Day with wife Coleen and fellow players Darron Gibson and Jonny Evans after his side's 5-0 win over Wigan.

But he was fined a week's wages and was dropped for the 3-2 defeat by Blackburn on Saturday before returning in Wednesday's 3-0 defeat at Newcastle, when he was substituted after 74 minutes.

Earlier on Friday, Ferguson refused to discuss the matter at his press conference to preview Sunday's FA Cup third-round tie with Manchester City.

Indeed, Ferguson offered only the briefest of responses to questions about the reason for Rooney's below-par performance in the midweek game.

"It is not a crime to try too hard," said Ferguson when asked whether his star player's desperation to succeed was the issue.
