    SWANSEA CITY FOOTBALL CLUB

Founded: 1912 | Nickname: The Swans | Ground: Liberty Stadium | Capacity: 20,532

    Overview

Swansea City will become the first ever Welsh side to play in the Barclays Premier League.

The Swans clinched promotion by beating Reading 4-2 in the Championship play-off final at Wembley.

Scott Sinclair scored a hat-trick which included two penalties with Stephen Dobbie getting the other goal. Noel Hunt and Matt Mills gave Reading hope with second-half strikes.

It was a sweet moment for manager Brendan Rodgers who had left the Berkshire club in December 2009 after a poor run of results.

And it was a just reward for his team who had finished third in the table, narrowly missing out on automatic promotion behind Queens Park Rangers and Norwich City.

Swansea were consistently in and around the play-off positions for most of the season, thanks largely to a strong home record.

They were beaten just three times at the Liberty Stadium, winning 15 of their 23 fixtures in front of their passionate fans.

Fired by 19 goals from midfield by Scott Sinclair, the Swans enjoyed a strong campaign.

While QPR always looked destined to take top spot, the race for the other automatic spot was much closer.

Swansea climbed to second in February on the back of four successive wins but by mid-April they had slipped back to fifth, behind Reading.

However they finished with a flourish winning their final three fixtures, scoring 10 times and conceding just once.

That was enough to secure third place on goal difference from neighbours Cardiff City and prompted dreams of an all-Welsh final at Wembley.

Swansea did their part drawing 0-0 with 10 men at Nottingham Forest before winning the return leg 3-1 but Cardiff were beaten 3-0 on aggregate by Reading.

That set-up an emotional reunion with the Royals for Rodgers who had the last laugh on his former employers.

Their Wembley triumph means Swansea will become the 45th different side to play in the Premier League.

    Club Heritage

It will be Swansea's first spell in the top division since 1983 when they dropped out of the old First Division.

Under manager John Toshack, the south Wales side had enjoyed a fairytale rise from the bottom division, winning promotion in three out of four campaigns between 1978 and 1981.

Their debut season at the highest level began with a remarkable 5-1 home win over Leeds United and included wins over Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur.

Toshack's team topped the table on numerous occasions but they could not maintain the momentum and finished sixth.

Their subsequent demise proved as rapid as their climb. The following season saw them suffer the first of three relegations in four years as they returned to the fourth tier.

Beset by financial problems, they were wound up in December 1985 but were saved by local businessman Doug Sharpe.

By 1986 the Swans were back where they had started, just eight years after their first promotion under Toshack.

In 1988 they won promotion via the inaugural play-offs and spent eight years in the third tier before suffering relegation in 1996.

They climbed back in 2000 as Division Three champions but came straight back down.

Amid behind-the-scenes turmoil, the struggling Swans narrowly avoided relegation to the Conference on the final day of the 2002/03 season.

A year later they finished 10th before winning promotion the following season as they bade farewell to their old Vetch Field ground to move to the Liberty Stadium in the summer of 2005.

They lost the League One play-off final in 2006 but won the League One title in 2008 under the shrewd stewardship of Roberto Martinez who left for Wigan Athletic in the summer of 2009.

Under Paolo Souza they finished seventh, missing a play-off place on the final day of the 2009/10 season.

Souza's subsequent departure saw Rodgers installed and he made an immediate impact guiding the Swans into the Barclays Premier League at his first attempt.

    Monk signs new Swans deal
Swansea captain Garry Monk has signed a new three-year contract with the club.

Monk has made over 230 appearances for Swansea since joining from Barnsley in 2004 and was offered a new deal last month.

He has now put pen-to-paper on the extension and is delighted he will be able to celebrate a decade with the South Wales side.

    MASSIVE HONOUR
"It's a big thing for me to sign a contract that will take me up to my tenth year," Monk told the club's official website.

"It's something I'm proud of, my family is proud of, and I've worked hard for it. It's a great feeling knowing I can represent the club for another three years at least.

"I've loved every minute of it. From the first day I walked in here under Kenny (Jackett), I've seen the massive progression made as players and as a club.

"To be part of that, and as captain for a large chunk of it, is a massive honour."

Swansea secured promotion to the top flight with victory in the Championship play-offs last season and open their campaign away to title contenders Manchester City next Monday.

    Swansea turn to Vorm
Swansea City have finalised the signing of Dutch goalkeeper Michel Vorm from Utrecht.

The 27-year-old, capped five times by Holland, has signed a three-year contract with the Barclays Premier League newcomers.

He could make his Swansea debut against Manchester City on Monday after the £1.5m move was completed.

Vorm is relishing his role in manager Brendan Rodgers' team as the new season approaches, and revealed Barclays Premier League stars past and present backed his move.

    fresh challenge

He said: "I've spoken with guys like Nigel de Jong, Robin van Persie, Rafael van der Vaart and Ruud van Nistelrooy and they all same the same - the Premier League is a beautiful place.

"The Premier League is the biggest league in the world and to be part of it is a massive opportunity.

"It is a huge challenge for the club because we are new to the league, but it is a fresh challenge too."

Vorm is set to be Swansea's first-choice goalkeeper for the new season, following the departure of Dorus de Vries to Wolves.

"I know Dorus was very popular here, and he did very well," said Vorm. "Dorus got a move to Wolves, so that leaves an opportunity.

"Hopefully I will take that opportunity. I know I will fit into the style at Swansea - it's not like the other British clubs where the goalkeeper is told to hit it down the pitch.

"So if I can impress here then hopefully I can help my chances with the Dutch national team. But, firstly, I have to play well for Swansea and help the team in the Premier League."

    Broken leg for Tate
Defender Alan Tate has broken his leg in what Swansea City have described as a "bizarre golfing accident".

Tate was a passenger in a golf buggy at a south Wales club when the buggy "lost control", Swansea said.

The 28-year-old former Manchester United trainee was diagnosed with a broken tibia of his left leg after being taken to Morriston Hospital by ambulance.

    four divisions

Tate is one of only three current Swansea players who have played in all four divisions with the club.

He played in the 3-2 win over Hull City which saved the Welsh club from relegation from the Football League in 2003.

Tate is in his 10th season with the Swans and has played more than 300 matches for the club.

    Tate signs new Swans deal
Swansea City defender Alan Tate has signed a new four-year contract with the Liberty Stadium club.

Tate is currently sidelined after breaking his leg in a golf buggy accident 10 days ago, and is expected to be out of action for up to six months.

The 28-year-old joined the Swans from Manchester United on loan during the 2002-03 campaign, before joining permanently in 2004.

He has since gone on to make over 300 appearances for the club and was glad to secure his future in south Wales, despite his injury absence.

    my career

He told the club's official website: "I'm delighted to sign the contract because is shows the club have a lot of faith in me.

"It will take me well into my 30s and who knows what will happen beyond that, although obviously I would like to stay even longer.

"It will depend on injuries and form, but I would love to finish my career at Swansea and, with a bit of luck, I hope that could happen.

"We've been talking about a contract for a while. The injury delayed things a bit. I was meant to sign before I got injured, but then it got put on the backburner.

"Then it was deadline day, which held things up again, but the new contract was never under threat because of the injury.

"The club could see it was an unfortunate accident which no-one could have expected."

Tate is the latest in a long line of Swansea players to commit their futures to the Premier League newboys with Neil Taylor, Garry Monk, Joe Allen, Angel Rangel, Nathan Dyer, Ashley Williams and Andrea Orlandi among those to pen new deals.

    Caulker increases Swans' concerns
Swansea City's Steven Caulker set for a spell on the sidelines after suffering a knee injury.

The 19-year-old on-loan centre-half has started all four of the Swans Barclays Premier League matches to date but damaged his cartilage after twisting his knee making a brave goal-line clearance in the 1-0 defeat at Arsenal last weekend, and will return to parent club Tottenham Hotspur for treatment.

A Swansea statement read: "A scan this week confirmed the injury and Caulker will return to White Hart Lane to be assessed further by club specialists when a further update will follow."

    defensive shortage

Ahead of their Barclays Premier League match with West Bromwich Albion on Saturday, Swansea are already without Alan Tate, who recently broke his leg in a golf buggy accident, although captain Garry Monk could be in line for a rapid return after stepping up his return from a foot injury.

Kemy Agustien, who had been identified as a possible solution to the defensive shortage, is also out after suffering a hamstring injury against Arsenal, but fellow midfielder Wayne Routledge is back in training after missing out at the Emirates with an ankle problem.

    Gower signs new Swans deal
Swansea City midfielder Mark Gower has agreed a new one-year deal to stay at the Liberty Stadium.

The 33-year-old's current contract was due to expire at the end of the season.

Swans manager Brendan Rodgers has been impressed by Gower's form since the club returned to the top flight and is delighted to secure him until June 2013.

Rodgers said: "Mark thoroughly deserves this. He is a great professional who is getting a chance in the Premier League when he probably should have been playing at this level many years ago."

    midfield role

The former Tottenham Hotspur trainee, who moved to Swansea in 2008, is happy protracted talks have been successful.

Gower said: "It took a while to get everything agreed, but I am delighted to finally sign the extension. It means I can concentrate fully on my football and help to establish Swansea City as a Premier League club.

"I'm feeling fit and enjoying my football more than ever. The way the manager wants us to play the game means it's a pleasure to be part of this midfield and this club.

"The way we play, sitting behind the ball in a deeper midfield role suits me

    Swansea suffer Rangel injury blow
Defender could miss up to a month of season with ankle problem

Angel Rangel has started every League match for Swansea this season

Swansea defender Angel Rangel has been ruled out for up to a month with an ankle injury.

The 29-year-old Spanish full-back landed awkwardly in the Barclays Premier League match against Aston Villa on Sunday.

A scan on Tuesday revealed Rangel, who had played every minute for the Swans in the League this season until he was substituted, has damaged ankle ligaments and could be out until the end of the year.

Swansea face bottom-of-the-table Blackburn Rovers on Saturday at Ewood Park - the first of six League matches for the Club in December.

Rangel's injury is likely to hand an opportunity to 21-year-old Ashley Richards, who replaced the Spaniard in the 0-0 draw with Villa.
